Judy Garland was born on June 10, 1922 with the name Francis Ethel Gumm. She lived in Grand Rapids, Minnesota with her parents. Her parents worked in vaudeville, which meant that they made money by performing as well as getting other people to perform in their shows. This is where Judy Garland started out because she was the youngest child born into a family of performers. She was only 2 years old when she first got on the stage with her sisters. She loved singing and dancing, and she showed that she had talent at a very young age. The first show that Judy Garland performed in was a Christmas show that her parents put on. The sisters performed together for the next few years.

When Judy Garland was just 13 years old, she was signed on with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. This was when she began to do movies. However, this was an interesting time for her because of her age. She was a bit too old to play a child, but she was still too young to play an adult in movies. In addition, Judy Garland was shorter than 5 feet tall, so she was worried about her appearance. In most cases, she was put into roles as more of a girl next door. However, during the time that she worked for this company, she was made to feel not very good about herself.

In 1938, when Judy Garland was just 16 years old, she was cast in the movie The Wizard of Oz. This movie was a box office hit, which was great since the company spent millions of dollars in order to make the film. Judy Garland was the third actress that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer had chosen to play the role of Dorothy Gale in this film. The two other actresses that they had hoped for were not available at the time.
