Leonardo DiCaprio was born in 1974. His father was George DiCaprio who was a comic book artist. His father sold cult comic books and was known for his artistic creativity. DiCaprio's parents noticed when he was very young that he was talented, so they signed him up with a talent agent. He began doing television commercials and educational shows. He was noticed by many different producers while he was doing this, and was cast in small television roles.
DiCaprio's first appearance in a movie was a small part in Critters 3. The part that he played in this movie was not a big one, but he did catch the eye of the people that worked on the television show Growing Pains. He played a larger role on this show; however, the sitcom was canceled shortly after he joined.
In the early 1990's, DiCaprio had the attention of the public from his time on Growing Pains, so he started auditioning for roles in different movies. He ended up acquiring roles in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries, and The Quick and the Dead. By acting in these movies, DiCaprio was able to begin to establish himself as an actor, but he was not yet a star.
DiCaprio became a star when he played major roles in Romeo + Juliet and Titanic. Both of these films were box office hits. Titanic was the top grossing film of all time, but after he did this film, he went back to doing smaller movies. A couple of the movies that he played roles in after Titanic were The Man in the Iron Mask and The Beach.
After he had acted in a couple of movies where he could stay out of the limelight, he jumped back into doing major movies such as Catch Me if You Can and Gangs of New York in 2002. After these movies, DiCaprio became one of the most sought after actors in Hollywood.
Of course, DiCaprio continued his acting career, but he did decide to get into environmentalism because that was what he had a passion for besides acting. He decided to become involved in the documentary The 11th Hour. This film was about the state of the environment.
Leonardo DiCaprio started off doing small parts in television shows and in commercials, but paved the way for himself to become a star. Now he has his acting career going full force and had the opportunity to follow his passion with environmentalism.
